5-S : It is the foundation for Improvement

 

A neat and clean factory leads to: Higher productivity, Produces fewer defects, Meets deadlines better, Ensures a Safer place to work – taking care of PQCD factors. This is Not difficult to understand, Nor difficult to do, but Difficult to maintain.

 

What are the Requirements?

§  Perseverance          

§  Determination            

§  Constant efforts

§  Ability to see what is important

§  Attention to details

 

How are Japanese companies doing so well?

 

§  People know nothing comes free

§  Functional literacy rate – highest in the world

§  Labour relations – harmonious

§  People know importance of finding better ways            of doing things

One such discipline of doing things better is 5-S.

 

The 5-S Process –

 

SORT          Clearly distinguish needed items from unneeded items  &  eliminate the latter

SYSTEMIZE  Keep needed items in the correct place to allow for  easy & immediate retrieval

SHINE        Keep the place swept & clean

STABILIZE   This is the condition when we  maintain the first three steps

SUSTAIN      Make it a habit and improvise

This programme involves a number of shop activities and comparing “before” and “after” 5-S.

-          How to go about it?

-          “NOW” in Garment Industry

-          “Picking own pockets!”

-          Teams Formation & Audit procedures

 

Preliminaries

  1. A visit to your unit by our faculty, to assess the current levels of orderliness in the unit.
  2. Abundant photographs of “dirty” areas as of now. Only then, People will be able to appreciate the benefits of 5-S.
