Six sigma is a strategic tool that aims at eliminating the defective outputs (waste of material, man hours and methods)
in a process, and thus, bringing down the cost of poor quality to zero. A six sigma process produces only 3.4 defective products
in a million opportunities. It is a competitive tool to increase the productivity of the organization and enhance customer
satisfaction.
Six sigma is implemented by re-examining all the current functions of the organization and the processes adopted to
identify all possibilities of defects. It is applied effectively to all functional areas of the organization, both manufacturing
and non-manufacturing processes.
Six sigma is implemented from the top to the bottom of the organizational hierarchy. It begins with the Management’s
commitment to eliminate waste, and is implemented by an hierarchy of executors. At the top of the pyramid are the Champions,
followed by the master Black Belts, the Green Belts and then the Team members.
Six sigma is not a one time activity, and can not be implemented overnight. It is a focused journey that must traverse
several lower sigma levels.
